Leverage ate $19B last October — derivatives traders still serving seconds 🍴
Nearly a year after one of crypto's most violent selloffs, analysts warn that the conditions which fueled the decline remain firmly in place. On October 10, 2025, bitcoin BTC $83,006.41 plunged from roughly $122,000 to $105,000 within minutes, days after touching a record above $126,000. The move triggered about $19 billion in liquidations across crypto markets and caught traders off guard following months of bullish positioning. The Oct. 10, 2025 crash exposed the dangers of leverage and crowded bets, and those risks have not diminished.
Though market participants now have improved tools for tracking derivatives and sentiment, the structural pressures behind last year's flash crash continue to shape short-term price action. Coming into the event, open interest sat near historic highs and traders had built heavily bullish positions, betting that bitcoin would extend its familiar four-year cycle toward fresh records.
"It just was a very quick and violent market top that we did not expect," said Mark Connors of Risk Dimensions, who previously ran a hedge fund positioning product at Credit Suisse. "Positioning was important then, and it's important today." He noted that participants had grown confident in projections of $250,000, $300,000 or even $400,000 bitcoin based on prior cycles, only for the market to reverse sharply.
Connors emphasized that the selloff was driven primarily by derivatives rather than onchain demand. "The movement was obviously not onchain data. I mean, it was all derivatives," he said. "So paper bitcoin again is alive and well and governs the near term." Perpetual futures, which let traders speculate on price moves without holding the underlying asset, remain a central feature of crypto trading, and exchanges retain strong financial incentives to offer leveraged products.
Observers have urged market participants to monitor derivatives data and sentiment indicators more closely and to consider self-custody as a way to reduce counterparty exposure. Whether those lessons translate into different behavior the next time positioning crowds in one direction remains the open question hanging over bitcoin trading.
