70M Kids, $1K Each: White House Auto-Enrolls a Generation Into S&P 500 πŸ“ˆ

β€”By our Markets Desk2 min read

The White House announced Tuesday that enrollment in Trump Accounts has reached 70 million users, covering essentially every eligible American child under 18 with a Social Security number. Since the program's July 4 launch, more than $4.5 billion has been deposited into the accounts, according to the administration. Each eligible child receives a one-time $1,000 government contribution that is invested primarily in broad US stock indexes, including funds tracking the S&P 500.

Eligibility for the $1,000 government deposit is limited to US citizens with a Social Security number born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. While the Treasury automatically creates an account for every eligible child, parents must claim the account to manage it or contribute additional funds. Money held in a Trump Account is invested through low-cost index-tracking funds, with the structure designed to allow compounding over the roughly 18-year period before the beneficiary reaches adulthood.

The White House framed the program in promotional language on X, writing, "THE FUTURE IS FUNDED. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Trump Accounts are giving America's next generation a real stake in the American dream, & auto enrollment makes it happen. 70M accounts. $4.5B+ already deposited since July 4th." The administration separately encouraged families to "Claim your Trump Account to unlock the one-time $1,000 contribution."

The program has drawn criticism over its potential to widen wealth disparities, since additional contributions depend on parents, employers, or donors adding money beyond the initial $1,000. A newborn receiving only the government deposit and earning a hypothetical 7% annual return would see the fund grow to roughly $29,000 by age 18, though the White House has not guaranteed any specific return and equity markets can be highly volatile. The administration has not publicly released a full breakdown of how the funds are allocated across indexes or whether any allocation to crypto-related assets is permitted.
