Uptober Ghosted: Bitcoin Bleeds Through "Spooky Season" as Hot CPI Haunts Every Candle

Bitcoin is trading near $82,000 after a bruising two-week stretch that has flipped the crypto calendar's most bullish month into one of its worst, with $BTC falling from a Sept. 21 peak of $87,354.33 to a low of $79,711 on Thursday as hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data revived bets on a Federal Reserve rate hike. The U.S. Consumer Price Index rose 3.7% year over year in September, above the 3.6% consensus, with gasoline up 9.1% on the month and core CPI climbing to 2.6% versus a 2.5% forecast, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics; a day later, the Producer Price Index jumped 6.3% annually against a 5.5% forecast, its largest monthly gain since March 2022. CME FedWatch put the odds of an October hike at 29.3% on Thursday, up from 17.7% a week earlier, while Polymarket and Myriad each priced it near 28%; Polymarket traders put a December hike at 79%, and federal funds futures still point to December for the next increase. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to roughly 5.3%, near a 24-year high, while Brent crude hovered near $104 a barrel, about 70% above a year ago amid the war between the U.S. and Iran, and South Korea's KOSPI plunged 8% on Wednesday before rebounding nearly 3% Friday as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix led a chip-stock recovery.

The selloff forced leveraged traders out en masse: 177,440 traders were liquidated in 24 hours for $948.22 million, with longs accounting for $858.96 million, or 90.6%, and the largest single order, a $12.03 million $BTC long on Binance, force-closed at $80,208.96, per CoinGlass. Spot Bitcoin ETFs shed $484.9 million on Oct. 7 — their worst day since June 25 — followed by $244 million the next session, then $261.4 million on Wednesday and $150.5 million on Thursday, per Decrypt's ETF tracker and SoSoValue. Iliya Kalchev, analyst at Nexo, said Bitcoin is "roughly 2% below the average cost of U.S. spot ETF holders, near $82,300, after closing above that line on 21 of the 24 days since September 21," putting ETF buyers back underwater. Luke Deans, Senior Research Associate at Bitwise Europe, told Decrypt the $83,000 zone combines the average ETF cost basis with the prior higher-high threshold and "has been tested repeatedly over recent weeks," while Ananda Banerjee, founder of Charlie Quant Lab, pegged strongest support at $77,000 based on on-chain cost-basis clusters, with Deans adding a Short-Term Holder Cost Basis near $74,000 and a 200-day moving average at $72,000.

Technical readings show the long-term uptrend intact but the short-term trend cooling. The 50-day exponential moving average (EMA) remains above the 200-day — a golden cross — while the daily Average Directional Index (ADX) read 27.7 on Wednesday and 37.9 on Friday, both above the 25 trend-confirmation level, with buyers (+DI) still ahead of sellers (-DI). The Relative Strength Index (RSI) sat at 45.8 during the slide, rose to 51.2 on Friday's bounce, and the Squeeze Momentum Indicator has been on for seven sessions, signaling compressed volatility. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index fell to 53 on Tuesday from an Aug. 26 reading of 82 ("extreme greed") and reads 56 on Friday, a neutral score. Myriad, a prediction market developed by Decrypt's parent company Dastan, gives 67% odds $BTC trades at or below $80,000 at some point in October, with 40% for $77,500, 24% for $75,000 and 79% for the week ending above $82,000.

Altcoins mirrored the slide: $ETH fell as low as $2,400 and traded near $2,440 on Wednesday before recovering to $2,511.40; $ZEC dropped nearly 10% on Thursday then jumped 8% to about $1,190 Friday; $SOL, $XRP and $TRX added roughly 1% on the rebound; 24-hour futures volume hit $212 billion, up 66% from $126 billion, with open interest down 1.58% to $143.4 billion. Tom Lee said Bitmine will stop buying $ETH once it owns 5% of supply, roughly 100,000 $ETH away; the firm's latest 12,532 $ETH purchase, worth about $32 million, brought holdings to 6,028,946 $ETH, or roughly 4.9% of supply. The next catalysts on traders' radar are Friday's remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, Wednesday's U.S. inflation data already in hand, and the Fed's Oct. 27–28 meeting.
