Bitcoin goes from moon mission to mortgage payment as BTC-backed loans hit the tuition queue 📚

—By our DeFi Desk2 min read

Bitcoin-backed lending is shifting from speculative trading toward everyday credit, with borrowers using BTC as collateral to cover tuition, emergency expenses, business cash flow and major purchases, according to two long-standing centralized lenders. "What I am seeing, both in the conversations I'm having and in the data, is that more people are starting to borrow against their Bitcoin for real-world needs. That includes emergency expenses and larger life decisions, such as funding college tuition or a once-in-a-lifetime trip. We also see people using it to supplement their cash flow," Hunter Albright, chief revenue officer of SALT Lending, told CoinDesk.

SALT, which began offering bitcoin-backed loans in 2016, initially catered to bitcoin miners but has more recently seen growth in institutional borrowers and older retail holders. Albright described an influx of "Gen Xers and baby boomers who own bitcoin and want help understanding the loan process." SALT did not disclose its total historical loan volume, but the broader centralized lending market is posting massive figures. Ledn, which launched in 2018, has funded more than $11 billion in loans to date and expects that figure to grow to $1 trillion in the coming years as more clients opt for non-trading loans.

"Our borrowers range from traditional investors seeking to get more from their bitcoin position, to entrepreneurs who want to access working capital, to institutional players," Adam Reeds, co-founder of Ledn, said in remarks reported by CoinDesk. Both executives framed the trend as evidence that bitcoin is increasingly functioning as collateral for mainstream credit rather than solely a vehicle for price speculation. Lending activity and the expanding borrower base are also cited as signs of growing mainstream adoption of crypto-backed credit products.

The move comes as the centralized lending market pushes toward fixed-rate offerings and expansion beyond bitcoin. Lenders have signaled plans to extend the model to other hard assets, including gold, as borrowers seek predictable terms and a wider range of collateral options. BTC traded at $82,994.63 at the time of reporting, according to the source.
