Wells Fargo's $2.3T Stops By Kraken's House for a Crypto Drink 🍸
Wells Fargo, the U.S. bank overseeing roughly $2.3 trillion in assets, is in early-stage discussions with Payward, the parent company of crypto exchange Kraken, to source crypto trading liquidity for its digital-asset operations, according to an October 7 report. Both Wells Fargo and Payward declined to comment publicly, and the talks may not result in a finalized deal.
The proposed structure would position Payward as an execution-layer liquidity provider rather than a custodian. Under what market participants describe as a "rent the rails" model, Payward would route and price trades through Kraken Prime, the firm's institutional prime brokerage arm, while Wells Fargo would retain direct control over its client relationships and brand identity. The arrangement is distinct from a balance-sheet Bitcoin allocation and would not involve Wells Fargo transferring assets to Payward for custody.
The negotiations extend Payward's expanding footprint across the U.S. banking sector. SoFi is already live as a partner, SGB Net has been integrated, and BNY is reported to be engaged in broader discussions with the firm regarding crypto-related services. The Wells Fargo talks mark the highest-profile potential addition to that network to date, though executives on both sides emphasized that conversations remain preliminary and non-binding.
Market observers noted that the structure would allow Wells Fargo to offer digital-asset trading to its client base without building proprietary crypto execution infrastructure, a path several large institutions have explored as client demand for tokenized assets and Bitcoin exposure has grown throughout 2025. Payward, through Kraken Prime, currently provides institutional liquidity, custody, and trading services to a range of corporate and financial clients. Wells Fargo has previously signaled interest in expanding digital-asset offerings, including exploratory work on a stablecoin and tokenized deposit products, though no timeline for a formal crypto trading launch tied to Payward has been disclosed.
