Google drops "vibe coding" game studio for normies — Unity $U and $RBLX not invited 🎮

Google on Wednesday launched Playground, a web platform that turns plain-English descriptions into playable games without code. Users can ask follow-up questions to change physics, rules, characters or settings, then share results via a link, according to the company. "Today, we're introducing Playground, an experimental gaming platform that lets you create, play, and share custom games," Google wrote. "Playground lowers the barriers to creation, so bringing game ideas to life can now be as easy as describing it through a few prompts—no coding experience required."

Playground is live for U.S. users 18 and older, with tiered creation access rolling out based on a user's Google AI subscription. The announcement did not include prices or specify which AI models power the tool, and games run in a web browser. Creators can keep them private or publish them to a community gallery, where every game goes through safety screening, and some genres support leaderboards and multiplayer. Google describes the platform as "an early experiment designed to make game creation more approachable" and pitches the workflow under the banner "If you can think it, you can play it."

An upgrade path runs through Unity Spark, which Google says Playground will soon integrate for creators seeking professional-level mechanics and high-fidelity 3D. Unity, the game-engine software maker whose then-CEO predicted in 2023 that generative AI would cut world-building time by five to ten times, saw shares close down about 24% the day after Google's earlier world-model release, with Roblox and other game stocks also dropping. DeepMind, Google's AI research lab, had unveiled Genie in 2024 as a model trained on more than 200,000 hours of gameplay video capable of generating a simple 2D platformer from an image or text prompt, with 11 billion parameters. In January, Google opened Project Genie to AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., built on Genie 3, a world model that generates an interactive environment in real time as a user moves through it, capped at 60-second sessions with warnings that worlds might not follow prompts or real-world physics. Roblox, where users build and play each other's games, had told investors in 2023 it was moving toward letting anyone generate avatars and clothing entirely through text prompts, and Playground now positions Google as a direct competitor in that no-code creator economy.
