Yields Go Brrr: $700M in Crypto Gets Rekt as Treasuries Throw a 24-Year Tantrum 📉

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Roughly $700 million in leveraged crypto bets across Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, Dogecoin and gold-pegged tokens were forcibly liquidated Wednesday as a sharp rally in U.S. Treasury yields triggered a broad selloff that shaved more than $100 billion from total crypto market capitalization over 24 hours, sending it back to $2.9 trillion. Sentiment gauges softened but stayed in bullish territory, with the Crypto Market Fear & Greed Index slipping from 73 (greed) to 70 (greed). Bitcoin ($BTC) dropped more than 4% to below $83,000, giving up its recent upside momentum, while Ethereum ($ETH) fell 6% to $4,436 and led Bitcoin on liquidations, with $26.64 million in $ETH positions liquidated on Binance alone.

Altcoins bore the brunt of the downturn. XRP, Solana ($SOL), Dogecoin ($DOGE) and Zcash ($ZEC) declined between 3% and 7% over the past 24 hours, while SKY and Uniswap posted steeper losses of nearly 12% and 11%, respectively. Trading flows pointed to forced deleveraging rather than voluntary selling, with high-leverage long positions across major venues absorbing the impact as yields spiked.

The trigger was the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield ($US10Y), which briefly climbed above 5.35% for the first time in 24 years before easing back to roughly 5%. The move came alongside heavy bond issuance, fresh three-year highs in mortgage rates and renewed inflation concerns tied to geopolitical tensions involving Iran, factors that drove simultaneous profit-taking in equities and digital assets. The synchronized reaction across stocks and crypto underscored how closely both markets are now tracking shifts in rate expectations, with leveraged crypto trades amplifying the downside once the yield move accelerated.

Ethereum's outsized liquidation footprint relative to Bitcoin highlighted the concentration of leverage in altcoin and ETH-linked derivatives desks, even as Bitcoin's drop in dollar terms remained the largest by absolute size. The combination of rising real yields, elevated mortgage costs and escalating geopolitical risk premiums left risk assets with little room to absorb new supply, and forced selling from underwater longs accelerated the move lower across the board.
