Hot Potato, Cold Math: Polymarket CEO Says 100x Token Frenzy Is Irrational 🍿
Shayne Coplan, CEO of prediction market platform Polymarket, said the rush to identify the next 100x cryptocurrency token has turned trading into a "game of irrational exuberance and hot potato," speaking during a fireside chat at Token2049 Singapore on Wednesday. "People think they're buying something, it's worthless, but they're buying it. If it can go to 100X, they want to sell it before it goes back to zero," Coplan said. The phrase echoes Nobel laureate economist Robert J. Shiller's 2000 book "Irrational Exuberance," which examined how optimism spreads through psychology, social dynamics and feedback effects.
Coplan said some traders can generate significant wealth through the strategy, but argued that asset prices rising exponentially must eventually come down. In December, BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes said altcoin season never ended, but that traders missed most of the big winners of the cycle. The challenge of timing entries and exits in low-cap tokens remains a defining feature of the current market, according to Coplan.
Polymarket's user growth indicates some traders are shifting toward wagers with more predictable odds, Coplan said. "On Polymarket, if you're trading these markets, there's no exponential upside," he explained, adding that informed traders continue taking these bets to wager on future events. Polymarket ranks as the second-largest prediction market, with $1.21 billion in prediction volume over the past seven days, according to DefiLlama data. Kalshi led with $2.3 billion over the same period. A December report from 10x Research argued that prediction markets are becoming the new battleground of the crypto economy, where data-driven "elite" traders profit from "information asymmetry" and spreads caused by casual investors.
The expansion of prediction markets has drawn increased regulatory scrutiny in the United States. On Aug. 14, JPMorgan Chase reportedly ended a banking relationship with Polymarket over regulatory concerns while expressing interest in a potential underwriting role should Polymarket seek to go public. More than a dozen US states have taken legal action against Polymarket, Kalshi, or both over sports event contracts, and authorities in several countries have blocked or restricted access to Polymarket. 1789 Capital, linked to Donald Trump Jr., led Polymarket's $1 billion fundraising round, according to a recent report.
