An Ethereum L1 Just High-Fived an L2 and Neither One Had to Trust the Other 🤝

The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) has executed what a project developer called the first atomic transaction linking layer-1 to a layer-2 network, a step toward knitting Ethereum's fragmented rollup landscape back together. EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña Díez shared the transaction on Tuesday and described it as the "first atomic cross-chain" L1-to-L2 transaction.

On-chain records show the test carried 0.001 Ether ($ETH) alongside a cross-chain call and a state update directed at a rollup. Atomic transactions are structured so that linked actions across separate networks either all settle or all unwind if any part fails, removing the need for a separate bridging step.

The EEZ framework was announced in March by developers seeking to let rollups and Ethereum mainnet interact within a single transaction without relying on external bridges. The goal is to reconnect liquidity and applications that have spread across distinct L2 networks.

Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst previously told Cointelegraph that the absence of synchronous composability has forced protocols to maintain separate deployments across L2s, fragmenting liquidity into multiple markets. Jakub Gregus, co-founder of decentralized finance protocol Hydration, called the demonstration "one of the most important milestones" in crypto and added that it could directly benefit the Ethereum mainnet as its native layer.
