Bitcoin's moving averages are playing musical stacks — and the 100-day is about to take the throne 👑
Bitcoin's 50-, 100- and 200-day simple moving averages are one crossover away from their first fully bullish alignment since June 24, 2025, a configuration in which the cryptocurrency's short-, medium- and long-term trends point higher at once. The setup is represented by the 50-day average sitting above the 100-day, and the 100-day sitting above the 200-day. As of this writing, the 50-day average, at $79,495, sits well above the other two, while the 100-day, at $79,493, is rising and on the verge of topping the 200-day at $79,539. Spot $BTC was last seen around $86,000–$87,000, down on the day. When the 100-day tops the 200-day, all three will stack in bullish order across every timeframe. "That crossover would restore the order of 50-day above 100-day above 200-day for the first time since the previous alignment formed on June 24, 2025," Vikram Subburaj, CEO of India-based FIU-registered Giottus exchange, said.
Traders use moving averages to gauge trend direction: when shorter-term averages sit above longer-term ones, recent prices are stronger than older ones, indicating upward momentum. The impending signal suggests that bitcoin's recovery over the past three months is real, with the token having surged more than 40% to roughly $87,000 during the third quarter. The ascent has since stalled near $85,000 amid a sustained uptrend in the U.S. Dollar Index. "To state a fact, the latest signal confirms the recovery has endured," Subburaj said.
Past alignments have produced mixed results. One formed on Oct. 27, 2020, when $BTC traded around $13,600, and held until May 2021, by which time bitcoin had hit a then-record high above $64,000. Another, confirmed in early November 2023, stayed intact until May 2024, during which bitcoin more than doubled from roughly $35,000 to $73,000. The bullish alignment that formed in June 2025, by contrast, lasted 97 days and produced only modest gains, with $BTC moving from roughly $106,000 to $112,000. A similar setup in June 2024 lasted just 20 days, during which bitcoin fell about 10%.
"The crossover strengthens the trend case, but it does not guarantee its continuation," Subburaj said. "The asset's price behaviour afterwards will determine whether it becomes a sustained bull-market structure or another short-lived alignment." He identified the next key test as bitcoin's ability to hold above its 50-day average during any pullback. "The more consequential test is whether Bitcoin can hold the 50-day average during a correction," he said.
