ETH Outran BTC by 70% in Q3 — Then the Order Book Whispers “Buy Small” 🧊

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Ether outpaced bitcoin in the third quarter of 2026, gaining roughly 70% against bitcoin's 42%, even as trading liquidity for the second-largest cryptocurrency thinned to between 35% and 45% of bitcoin's median daily market depth, down from at least 60% in the year-earlier period, according to a report from CoinGecko covering July 6 through Sept. 30. At last check, ETH was $2,719.61 and BTC was $86,070.97.

The report defined market depth as the total dollar value of buy and sell orders resting on exchanges within a set distance of the market price, and labeled the year-on-year decline "a stark drop from last year's figures." Within 0.15% of the market price, ether had $13 million to $14 million in depth per exchange, with most venues still maintaining over $1 million on each side. "ETH remains fairly liquid at this range [within 0.15% of the market price], with most exchanges maintaining over $1 million in depth on each side," CoinGecko said.

Bitcoin's order book, by contrast, deepened. Bid depth on the BTC order book was about $29 million and ask depth about $37 million, roughly 50% above 2025 levels, while ether's tighter depth sat roughly a third of bitcoin's. CoinGecko measured that across the same 0.15% band used for ether, illustrating that the gap between price performance and resting liquidity was concentrated closest to the mid price, the area most relevant for routine execution and for sizing larger fills without slippage.

Solana's SOL showed a parallel pattern at a wider range. Depth within 2% of the market price fell from about $28 million per side in 2025 to around $20 million in 2026. "The overall liquidity for SOL has shrunk considerably since 2025," CoinGecko said. SOL's thinning appeared further from the mid, a gauge of how much buying or selling pressure the market can absorb before the price registers a larger move.

The report also noted that XRP's liquidity was skewed bullish in the third quarter. CoinGecko did not provide a corresponding depth figure for XRP in the published summary. Treasury accumulation, including Bitmine topping 6 million ETH, and capital rotating into perpetual futures were cited as factors that can lift spot price while leaving centralized-exchange limit order books comparatively thin, helping explain why ether's 70% rally coincided with a measurable drop in on-exchange depth at the tight end of the book.
