Roughrider Coin Hits Mainstream: Solana Now Settles Dollars at 90 North Dakota Banks ðŸ¤
Roughrider Coin, a dollar-denominated interbank payment token issued under the oversight of the Bank of North Dakota, has gone live on banking technology provider Fiserv's digital asset platform, making Solana the underlying settlement network for transactions among roughly 90 North Dakota banks and credit unions. Fiserv announced the production launch on Oct. 1, naming Roughrider Coin as the first live use case on its digital asset platform.
The token operates through Commercial Center, Fiserv's online banking system already used for traditional interbank transfers. According to the Bank of North Dakota, initiation, approval, and settlement of Roughrider Coin transactions will flow through the same operational channels institutions currently use for ACH and wires, meaning bank staff will execute the process inside familiar banking interfaces.
Bank of North Dakota said in the announcement that the use of an interbank payment token "represents a meaningful step in modernizing the bank-to-bank payment process while keeping the process firmly within the regulated banking system," and that the initiative is designed to operate within existing regulatory and supervisory frameworks. Fiserv has positioned its digital asset platform as a way for banks to engage with blockchain-based settlement without leaving their core banking infrastructure.
Roughrider Coin is the first token issued on the platform and is overseen by BND, which acts as a state-chartered bank. The token's rollout marks Fiserv's first live deployment of a production digital asset use case through Commercial Center, a system already used by a broad base of U.S. banks for interbank transfers.
Fiserv's Oct. 1 announcement confirmed that additional use cases beyond Roughrider Coin are expected to be added to the digital asset platform in future phases, though no specific timeline or further token issuers were named. The launch establishes North Dakota as the first U.S. state to route bank-to-bank settlement on a public blockchain at production scale, with the Bank of North Dakota continuing to oversee the token's operation within the state's existing banking regulatory perimeter.
