Absa Just Became Africa's Crypto Babysitter — And $BTC Is the First Kid 🏦
Absa Group has launched a regulated digital-asset custody platform in South Africa, becoming the first African bank to offer institutional clients direct custody of cryptocurrencies. The Johannesburg-based bank confirmed the service targets asset managers, non-bank financial institutions and corporate clients, with retail customers excluded from the initial rollout.
The platform supports $BTC, $ETH, USDC and assets on the XRP Ledger, with Bitcoin currently representing the largest share of holdings under custody. Absa developed the custody infrastructure in partnership with Ripple, with the service operated by its Corporate and Investment Banking division following the previously announced partnership between the two firms.
Absa received regulatory approval before deploying the platform, positioning the bank to hold, manage and transfer digital assets through its existing banking infrastructure. South Africa's major crypto providers collectively held R25.3 billion in digital assets by late 2024, underscoring the scale of the market the bank is entering.
"We expect to extend this to other client segments in South Africa in due course," said Rob Downs, head of digital assets at Absa Corporate and Investment Banking. Downs added that the bank is "actively working" to introduce the service in some of its other African markets, though Absa has not disclosed a timeline for expansion or named additional assets it intends to support.
The custody launch reflects growing institutional demand for regulated digital-asset infrastructure across emerging markets, with Absa indicating it plans to onboard additional cryptocurrencies as client needs evolve.
