Stablecoin Homecoming: $USDT Finally Checks Back Into Bitcoin's Original Hotel 🏨
Tether is bringing its $USDT stablecoin back to the Bitcoin network this month through Utexo, a Tether-backed infrastructure project founded in 2025, more than a decade after the token first launched on Bitcoin's Omni protocol in 2014. $USDT, the world's largest stablecoin with a market cap of nearly $190 billion, subsequently moved most of its activity to Ethereum and Tron, with Tether halting Omni issuance in 2023. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino teased the return on X last week, writing: "It's coming home."
Utexo, which raised $7.5 million earlier this year, has been granted the commercial license to issue $USDT on Bitcoin, co-founder Viktor Ihnatiuk told CoinDesk in a Telegram message. The company will provide infrastructure for exchanges, wallet providers and payment companies through APIs, SDKs and cloud services. "Tether has always been a Bitcoin company," Ihnatiuk said in a recent interview. "Bitcoin for them is a stability haven, along with gold. That's why Tether kept buying $BTC and supporting the Bitcoin community." Tether holds around 100,000 $BTC ($8.4 billion) as of mid-August, according to Bitcoin Treasuries. "I can't speak for Tether directly, but my personal observation is that Bitcoin is a big priority for them, and it's our job to make $USDT as accessible on Bitcoin as it is everywhere else," Ihnatiuk added.
Utexo's architecture differs from $USDT's existing deployments by combining RGB's client-side validation with Bitcoin's unspent transaction output (UTXO) model. Where Ethereum and Tron rely on account-based models that expose balance updates and transactions on public ledgers, Utexo's approach keeps transaction details off-chain between counterparties, using Bitcoin's ledger solely to cryptographically demonstrate proof of ownership. The setup targets three primary use cases: private $USDT transfers, direct swaps between native $BTC and $USDT without routing through an exchange, and lending in which borrowers use native bitcoin as collateral without wrapping it on another blockchain, as is the case with tokens like WBTC.
Bitcoin mainnet support is expected to launch first, with Utexo planning subsequent integration with the Lightning Network for faster $USDT payments. The deployment follows Tether's prior effort to re-enter Bitcoin with $USDT via RGB.
