Slovenia's .si Domain Boom Meets Trump's "Super Intelligence" Rebrand — Coincidence? 🧩
Slovenia's country-code domain registrations jumped from fewer than 2,000 in August to roughly 44,000 in September, a surge that coincided with the Trump administration's push to rebrand Artificial Intelligence as "Super Intelligence," according to the BBC. Slovenia signed an AI partnership with Washington on September 24, and the country owns the .si web suffix and is the birthplace of First Lady Melania Trump. President Donald Trump floated the term "Super Intelligence" on Truth Social on September 19, used it at the United Nations on September 22, and on September 29 signed an executive order requiring federal agencies to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" instead of AI.
Investor and policy consultant Adam Cochran alleged the registration activity began as early as June, claiming AI-related .si names began changing hands at high prices before the rebrand. "AI-related .si names started going for tens of thousands of dollars," Cochran wrote. He estimated that around 12,000 AI- or MAGA-related domains were registered or changed hands before Trump's push, and he called on a future Congress to investigate the buyers. No public evidence has linked the purchases to Trump, his family or his inner circle.
The price gap between the suffixes helps explain the spike. A .si name costs about $11 a year, while a minimum two-year .ai registration runs roughly $180, according to Netcraft. More than half of the .si domains Netcraft detected at Dynadot between Trump's September 19 post and his UN speech were later listed for resale. Economist Roman Sheremeta described the episode as an alleged "enrichment ploy."
Slovenia's agreement with the United States covers AI, semiconductors, critical minerals and secure supply chains, and it does not mention domains. For now, the .si domain boom is documented, the alleged Trump connection remains unproven, and no buyers have been publicly identified.
