Eightfold or Buybackfold? Ethena's $40Bn USDe Dream Tempts ENA Past $2
Standard Chartered has initiated coverage of Ethena, forecasting the protocol's USDe stablecoin supply will expand eightfold to $40 billion by the end of 2028 and assigning ENA a $2 target, roughly seven times the $0.28 reference price cited in the report. The projections, circulated on September 30, 2026 via The Defiant's Twitter account, also imply ENA will outperform Bitcoin ($BTC) and Ether ($ETH) through the same horizon, with USDe expected to slightly outpace the broader stablecoin market. The bank framed the call as a valuation question tied to whether diversified yield and buybacks can scale quickly enough to support the repricing.
Ethena's original yield engine relied on the crypto basis trade, but as those returns compressed the protocol expanded into decentralized finance, institutional lending, and basis trades tied to equities and commodities. Standard Chartered noted these sources currently generate a blended yield of 5.2%. The bank also projected the tokenized-asset market will grow from $350 billion to $4 trillion by 2028, a trajectory Ethena must capture to convert broader adoption into recurring protocol revenue.
A fee switch passed through Ethena governance routes 95% of net revenue from designated business lines into ENA buybacks once USDe crosses specific supply milestones. The protocol confirmed on September 25, 2026 via Crypto Banter's Twitter account that USDe can now earn from tokenized stock perpetuals on Binance, adding a new revenue stream to the mix. Ethena has stated buybacks only begin once USDe supply reaches those governance-defined thresholds.
Whether the mechanism can scale to support Standard Chartered's valuation depends on USDe hitting the supply levels required to activate and expand the buyback program, alongside sustained net revenue from the broadened yield sources. The bank's targets remain projections rather than assured returns, with execution tied directly to the protocol's ability to convert market share into token demand.
