—By our Markets Desk1 min read

Bitcoin is closing out its strongest quarter since the first three months of 2024, with ether posting its best quarterly performance since the first quarter of 2021, according to data from Coinglass.

Assuming a close on Tuesday near $84,000, bitcoin (BTC $83,178.80) is set to end the third quarter with roughly a 44% gain, trailing only the 68.7% rise recorded in Q1 2024. The advance follows three consecutive down quarters for the largest cryptocurrency.

Ether (ETH $2,668.97) has climbed about 70.9% over the same three-month stretch, its largest quarterly increase since the first quarter of 2021, when it rallied 160.7%. Ether had also posted three straight losing quarters before the rebound.

Historically, the fourth quarter has been bitcoin's strongest period. Since 2013, the October-to-December stretch has produced an average gain of 77% and a median gain of 47.7% for BTC, according to Coinglass.
