Brazil's Petrobras Taps Cardano to Audit Jet Fuel's Existential Crisis ✈️

Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled energy company, is testing the Cardano blockchain across two research projects aimed at tracking environmental claims for lower-carbon fuels, the Cardano Foundation announced Wednesday. The work covers sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a lower-carbon alternative to conventional jet fuel usable in existing aircraft and airports, and Diesel R, Petrobras' diesel blended from renewable materials such as vegetable oils and animal fats. Petrobras is collaborating with the Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio on both initiatives.

The aviation project applies a Book-and-Claim model, under which an airline can pay for the environmental benefit of sustainable fuel even if the fuel itself is used elsewhere. Cardano records each benefit's origin, recipient and claim time on-chain to help prevent the same emissions reduction from being counted twice. Tokens issued under the application, called CS-SAF, carry metadata aligned with the Carbon Offsetting Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Passengers can enter departure and destination airports in an application, calculate the corresponding fuel benefit and receive a certificate tied back to the original fuel record.

The diesel project creates digital checkpoints across production, transportation and use, stitching those records into a single history of the fuel's journey. The Cardano Foundation said the resulting data could support Scope 3 emissions reporting, which covers indirect emissions across a company's suppliers and customers and often requires information held by other businesses. "Brazil has been one of the most consistent adopters of Cardano, from SERPRO in government to SENAI in industry. It's great to see Petrobras, one of the largest firms in the region, continue to see value in on-chain provenance and traceability," Frederik Gregaard, chief executive of the Cardano Foundation, told CoinDesk. "Institutional interest in Cardano keeps growing, especially with x402 arriving on Cardano and Fireblocks adding support for Cardano Native Tokens. It's never been a better time for enterprises to consider what this technology offers," Gregaard added.

Both projects remain research-stage. The diesel model is described as proposed, and the announcement disclosed neither fuel volumes covered nor a timeline for broader deployment. The work builds on a collaboration that began in 2023 with blockchain education for Petrobras employees and expanded in 2025 to energy-sector research with PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs. Separately, Cardano joined x402 this month, a payment standard that lets applications and AI agents pay for data or computing services as they request them, with its initial payment-processing software tested on Cardano's pre-production network and commercial use on the live blockchain still pending.

Other firms have pursued similar tools. Shell has tracked SAF environmental attributes through Avelia, a Book-and-Claim platform launched in 2022, and said in a September update that Avelia had contributed to more than 84 million gallons of SAF entering the global fuel network since launch, resulting in more than 780,000 tonnes of CO₂e abatement through June 2026. Australia's Viva Energy signed an agreement with NoviqTech in January to research digital Book-and-Claim systems for sustainable aviation fuel.
