Barr Floats More Hikes While Traders Ghost October Odds 🍂

Federal Reserve Board Governor Michael Barr reiterated on Tuesday that additional interest rate increases may be required to return inflation to the Fed's 2% target, even as market participants trimmed expectations for an October move. Speaking in Detroit, Barr said that, in his base case, policymakers may need to raise rates further to ensure price stability is achieved in a timely manner. "We want to support sustainable, durable growth in support of maximum employment, and price stability is crucial to that," Barr stated.

Barr's remarks come weeks after the Federal Open Market Committee delivered its first rate hike since 2023 at the September FOMC meeting. He cautioned that risks to achieving the inflation goal have increased, while downside risks to the labor market have cooled. The governor noted that the economy remains strong and the labor market solid, describing the Fed as well-positioned to recalibrate policy in order to better balance inflation and employment risks.

Crypto and macro traders have pared back bets on a near-term hike, with the odds of an October Fed rate hike sitting at roughly 50%, according to market pricing. The shift follows recent softer data prints that have complicated the policy outlook, even as officials such as Barr emphasize that the disinflation process is not yet complete. The Federal Reserve has kept its benchmark rate elevated since the 2022–2023 tightening cycle, and any additional move would mark the second hike of the year.

Barr is among a group of Fed officials who continue to signal that restrictive policy may need to persist or intensify depending on incoming data. He reiterated that achieving the 2% inflation objective remains the committee's priority and that policymakers will respond as needed to risks on either side of their dual mandate. The governor did not specify a timeline for potential further action, leaving the path of rates contingent on forthcoming employment and price data.

Markets will look to subsequent Fed communications and economic releases for confirmation of the trajectory implied by Barr's remarks. With the October meeting approaching, traders, including those positioning in $BTC and $ETH, continue to weigh the probability of another hike against signs of cooling in both inflation prints and labor demand.
