Morgan Stanley Opens Crypto Playground: Deposit, Tokenize, Automate, Repeat 🏦
Morgan Stanley has set up a Digital Asset Lab to test blockchain technologies including stablecoins, tokenization and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, Bloomberg reported on September 29. The initiative places the Wall Street bank inside its existing network of innovation labs, allowing staff to probe emerging technologies without exposing core systems to risk.
Megan Brewer, who leads market innovation and labs at Morgan Stanley, said in an interview that the lab will examine tokenized deposits, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), money-market funds and DeFi vaults designed to automate investment strategies around the clock. The bank is assessing how blockchain-based use cases could extend across its broader business, including wealth management and capital markets operations.
The Digital Asset Lab follows Morgan Stanley's earlier moves into crypto, which include the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs and the addition of crypto trading on the E*TRADE platform. The bank has not disclosed a timeline for commercial products emerging from the lab or specified which stablecoin issuers, tokenization platforms or DeFi protocols are being evaluated.
The lab's scope of tokenized deposits, CBDCs, money-market funds and DeFi vaults indicates that Morgan Stanley is mapping the full lifecycle of on-chain finance, from issuance and settlement to automated portfolio management. By operating the unit inside a controlled innovation environment, the firm can model liquidity flows, custody arrangements and regulatory considerations before any client-facing rollout.
The Wall Street bank's expansion into blockchain research arrives as major financial institutions continue to build dedicated digital asset teams following the approval of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the United States. Morgan Stanley's lab adds to a growing roster of traditional finance firms establishing structured programs to study tokenization, programmable money and on-chain yield strategies.
