Coinbase Now Holds Its Own Bag: CFTC Greenlights $BTC Exchange's In-House Clearinghouse 🧹
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization on Monday, completing Coinbase's end-to-end federal registration stack for running a US-regulated derivatives business without renting any layer from third parties. The registration took effect immediately and authorizes the clearinghouse to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps, though it does not extend to leveraged products.
A derivatives clearing organization sits between the counterparties of a derivatives trade, guaranteeing settlement and managing counterparty risk, including in the event of default. Through its designated contract market, Coinbase Derivatives, LLC, the company lists US-regulated futures tied to $BTC and $ETH, as well as commodity and equity-index futures, and provides long-dated perpetual-style crypto futures. Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc. operates as the firm's futures commission merchant.
"Today's CFTC approval completes Coinbase's end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling us to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement," said Molly Abraham, Coinbase's general counsel. Coinbase described the entity as the first USDC-native derivatives clearinghouse in the United States, taking the stablecoin as collateral and settling continuously rather than on a banking calendar.
Coinbase said the move will allow it "for the first time" to create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly, which it expects to accelerate product launches and reduce dependencies on external partners. Margined derivatives and the single-stock perpetuals Coinbase plans to introduce on names including Apple, Tesla and Nvidia will continue to clear through existing counterparties.
The approval lands in a competitive stretch for US-regulated crypto derivatives infrastructure. Payward, parent of rival exchange Kraken, completed its acquisition of Bitnomial in May for a reported $550 million, gaining a CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse and futures commission merchant, and has since announced plans to deploy perpetual futures for US clients on Hyperliquid. Prediction-market operator Kalshi has also filed to offer US stock perpetual futures.
Coinbase paired the Monday announcement with an expansion of its previously disclosed institutional partnership with Citi, under which the bank's Spring merchant platform will allow institutional clients to accept stablecoin payments at checkout, with Coinbase converting the tokens to fiat and Citi settling the funds as bank of record.
