Quantum of Sol-ace: $BTC Slips to $83K While QNT Leads Altcoins Off the Cliff 🪂
Bitcoin fell to $83,000 on Monday, down 1.7% since midnight UTC and 2.1% over 24 hours, with the broader altcoin market bearing the brunt of the sell-off. According to CoinDesk data, 91 of the 100 constituents of the CoinDesk 100 were lower on the day, pushing the index down 2.6% to 1,874.56. The unwind closely mirrored Friday's surge in reverse, with tokens that led last week's gains posting the steepest losses.
Quant (QNT) dropped 16% since midnight after climbing 39% over 24 hours during Friday's session, while The Graph (GRT) fell 12% following a 14% rise, and Ondo (ONDO) lost 12% after leading tokenization trades higher. Sector indices that led Friday's rotation led the retreat on Monday, with the DeFi Select Index (DFX) down 6.4% over 24 hours and the CoinDesk Computing Index (CPUS) off 3.2%. The $BTC price stood at $83,077.71, with $GRT at $0.03188 and $ONDO at $0.5235.
The trigger for the risk-off move originated in oil markets rather than crypto, after President Donald Trump rejected Iran's latest conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Those terms included the release of frozen Iranian funds, the lifting of oil sanctions and the end of the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports. Brent crude climbed back above $100 to $100.83, up 3.2% on the day, reversing Friday's move below that level. Gold fell 3.3% to $4,145, silver slipped 5.1% to $61.00, and U.S. equity futures were lower, with S&P 500 contracts off 0.44% and Nasdaq 100 futures down 0.95%, while the dollar index firmed 0.06% to 101.09.
Derivatives positioning underscored the defensive tone across the market. Trading volume jumped 70% to $172 billion over 24 hours while open interest (OI) fell 3% to $150 billion, a combination suggesting positions were being closed rather than new bets initiated. The 24-hour taker long/short ratio stood at 46.9% to 53.1% as of 09:50 UTC, indicating aggressive sellers held a slight edge. Futures OI dropped to 650,000 BTC, the lowest level since March, with funding rates negative across major exchanges. Ether open interest fell to 12.85 million ETH, down from 13.95 million on July 1 and a late-May peak above 15.65 million.
