Ripple's $155T Flex Meets a $685B Reality Check 🧾

—By our Altcoins & Tokens Desk2 min read

A $155 trillion cross-border payments figure recently recirculated across crypto feeds, propelled by influencer @strivex_ and an earlier post from @BANXRPLNEWS that has been making the rounds since at least June 2026. The number itself is accurate, but it refers to broad global cross-border payment flows rather than the consumer remittance corridor Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin is built to serve. Consumer remittances total roughly $685 billion annually, and that is the retail transfer market RLUSD targets.

Ripple's payment infrastructure continues to expand regardless of the headline math. Jeonbuk Bank has moved away from SWIFT in favor of Ripple Payments, and JPMorgan, Ripple, and Ondo Finance completed the first tokenized U.S. Treasury transaction settled on the XRP Ledger. Those deployments show that Ripple's rails are operating in production settings tied to established financial institutions.

The underlying tension for XRP holders centers on utility versus token demand. Banks and counterparties using the XRP Ledger for settlement are not required to hold XRP itself, and a growing share of flows on the network is denominated in RLUSD rather than the native token. Ripple has publicly framed RLUSD as complementary to XRP, designed for stable-value transfers while XRP functions as a bridge asset. The practical effect is that institutional settlement volume on the ledger can rise without translating directly into XRP token demand.

The $155 trillion figure traces to widely cited estimates of total cross-border payment flows, including trade finance, correspondent banking, and capital markets activity. By contrast, the $685 billion remittance market refers specifically to consumer and small-business transfers sent across borders, the segment RLUSD was designed to compete in.

For now, XRP's price action continues to be driven by retail sentiment cycles, regulatory developments, and broader crypto market conditions rather than direct settlement volume on the ledger, with the gap between infrastructure adoption and token performance remaining the central debate among market participants.
