AI Wants Pocket Money: Armstrong Crowns Crypto the Checkout Bot for Autonomous Spenders 🤖
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said he expects AI agents to drive a new wave of crypto and stablecoin-based payments, describing digital assets as programmable money suited to automated software transactions. He framed crypto networks and stablecoins as round-the-clock payment rails that allow bots to move value without relying on traditional banks, noting that AI agents will need faster settlement as they take on more of the buying and subscribing once handled by humans.
Armstrong called crypto "real-time programmable money," pointing to use cases that include computing resources, subscriptions, data purchases and other online services. Stablecoins, he argued, can give autonomous software access to digital dollars without opening conventional bank accounts, positioning them as a potential new source of stablecoin demand tied directly to AI activity. Coinbase has said it plans to extend its AI agent infrastructure beyond crypto over time.
Coinbase for Agents, previously reported by CoinGape, is the company's first product aimed at this market and will initially let users of ChatGPT and Claude execute cryptocurrency trades through prompts. The service is positioned as a building block for broader machine-to-machine commerce, with the company indicating the same framework could eventually support trades in stocks and prediction markets.
