Morgan Stanley Walks Into the Prediction Market Casino β€” and Insists It’s a Hedge Desk 🎲

Morgan Stanley has signed on as a strategic partner for the NEXTPredict summit in New York on October 22 and 23, becoming the first major bank to publicly attach its name to a prediction-market initiative, according to Pierre Lindh, co-founder and managing director of NEXT.io. The bank will lead a day-two panel on institutional capital, chaired by Stephen Grambling, Morgan Stanley's head of U.S. gaming, lodging and leisure research. The session will examine the market structure, risk and participation issues that stand between institutional balance sheets and event-contract venues.

"Prediction markets are attracting greater attention across the financial system, but institutional participation will depend on a clear understanding of the opportunity, market structure and risks involved," Grambling said. The move formalizes a courtship that has played out over the past year, with JPMorgan chief executive Jamie Dimon telling CBS in April that the bank was weighing an entry while describing most activity as closer to gambling than investing and ruling out sports and politics. Goldman Sachs chief executive David Solomon disclosed on the firm's January earnings call that it had met with the two largest operators.

Valuations in the category have moved sharply higher. Kalshi recently raised at a reported $40 billion valuation, Polymarket closed a funding round at $20 billion, and DraftKings, the closest listed comparable, sits at around $13 billion. Lindh said roughly 90% of current liquidity and turnover is concentrated in sports contracts, with a large share of users treating the venues as sportsbooks, a mix that the headline valuations will need to evolve beyond if institutional capital is to follow.

"The story that the prediction market industry is telling investors now is that the future of the prediction market space is not what the prediction market space is today," Lindh told Decrypt. He added that for those valuations to hold, the platforms will need to "become a more institutional tool," giving banks new ways to hedge exposures that conventional instruments do not price well, from hurricane-driven revenue shocks for conference operators to internal forecasting for non-financial corporates such as NEXT.io itself, which uses markets among staff to project commercial targets.

Bank research desks are separately studying whether contract prices produce sharper reads on real-world probabilities than polling or traditional data feeds, Lindh said, framing institutional demand as a function of both hedging utility and informational edge. NEXT.io is positioning the October panel as the first structured forum in which those questions are aired publicly between bank research, trading and risk functions and the operators building the venue layer underneath them.
