Bitcoin Hits Snooze At $84K While Altcoins Throw A Rager 🚀

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Altcoins surged across the board as bitcoin consolidated near $84,000, with $BTC trading at $84,342 on Friday and unchanged since midnight UTC after climbing from below $63,000 in August to almost $87,000 on Tuesday. Ninety-three of the CoinDesk 100 constituents were higher over the past 24 hours, the CoinDesk 80 advancing 4.7% against the CoinDesk 5's 1.0%, according to CoinDesk data. CoinMarketCap's altcoin season index climbed to 56 out of 100 from 45 a week ago and 38 a month ago, its highest reading in more than three months, reflecting the pattern of capital rotating into more speculative bets once bitcoin has run hard and stalled.

Chainlink ($LINK) at $13.93, internet computer ($ICP) and bittensor ($TAO) drove the CoinDesk Computing Index (CPUS) 9.5% higher over 24 hours, with the DeFi Select Index (DFX) up 8.7%, both more than three times the blended benchmark's 2.5%. The rotation was attributed in part to elevated funding costs pushing traders holding long positions to seek returns elsewhere, while Quant jumped 39% over 24 hours, leading individual gainers.

Markets shrugged off Bitget's $351.6 million hack, the largest exchange breach in months, in which attackers compromised a backend system in the exchange's wallet infrastructure and spoofed transaction data to trigger the platform's own authorisation process. Chief executive Gracy Chen said private key compromise has been ruled out and that a $464 million user protection fund covers the loss, though withdrawals remain suspended pending a security review.

The macro backdrop turned constructive, with European shares opening sharply higher on reports that U.S. and Iranian negotiators are discussing a phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Brent crude below $100 at $98.94, gold up 0.26% to $4,287 and the dollar index easing 0.11% to 101.14. Derivatives positioning showed the 24-hour long-short taker volume ratio near 50%, easing off the prior day's 52% short-heavy tilt, while trading volume fell 17% to $206 billion.
