Stablecoins, Self-Custody, Visa Rails: BIX Card Spends Like It Means It 🪙
BIX, a neo-finance app operated by Cayman Islands-registered Bix Ltd with offices in Dubai, has begun connecting self-custody wallets with a Visa card programme that lets users spend stablecoin balances at merchants worldwide, with purchases settling to retailers in fiat. The company says Standard membership is free, a virtual Visa card costs $9.99 and works immediately for online and mobile-wallet payments, while the US programme applies a 1% FX fee on applicable foreign-currency purchases; BIX states there are no funding fees. Card spending is supported in USDC and USDT, across supported combinations of Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Base, Solana and Optimism, and BIX currently serves eligible residents of 29 US states subject to identity verification and programme requirements.
Chief executive Imonitie framed adoption as a marketing problem rather than a product one, telling reporters, "There's nothing hard about selling BIX. The biggest challenge is educating people about its existence and the 20 more states that we will open in the coming months." The company is targeting expansion to 49 states within six to eight months, subject to applicable approvals and partner readiness. BIX operates as a finance app rather than a bank, with card issuing and other regulated financial services delivered through third-party institutions under their respective arrangements.
Spending limits are described by BIX as flexible and customizable based on the user's deposited collateral, subject to programme requirements. Card funding currently uses a separate smart contract; the company has development under way for direct wallet-linked spending, under which eligible card purchases would draw against supported wallet balances without a separate top-up step.
On the roadmap, BIX Plus will be priced at $119 a year and bundle access to Visa Signature cards with eligible benefits including airport lounge access, rental-car insurance and travel discounts, with packages depending on programme and country and lounge access not necessarily including complimentary visits. Plus will also introduce virtual accounts supporting incoming payments and outgoing fiat transfers that connect stablecoin balances with ACH, SEPA and SWIFT, including account details such as IBANs, along with priority support and one included virtual card created when members choose. New Standard cards will be issued as Platinum and new Plus cards as Signature where supported, while existing Signature cardholders keep their current cards. Physical cards are planned at $99, separate from membership, with a 0.6% BIX ATM withdrawal fee.
