Cold Storage Goes Public: Ledger and Payward Put Tokenized Stocks on Ice 🧊

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Payward and Ledger have announced a partnership to bring hardware-wallet custody to tokenized stocks, enabling eligible xStocks users to store supported equity-linked tokens on Ledger devices and require physical device approval before transactions are signed. The integration marks Ledger's first listing of tokenized stocks from Payward's xStocks platform and extends the hardware-wallet firm's custody footprint beyond cryptocurrencies into blockchain-based equities.

Under the arrangement, users can connect xStocks holdings to Ledger hardware wallets, keeping tokenized stock balances outside of an online trading account. Transactions on supported assets can be configured to require manual confirmation directly on the Ledger device, adding a physical-signature step to the transfer process. Cold storage, long a standard custody model for crypto holders managing their own private keys, is now being applied to blockchain representations of publicly traded equities.

Payward, the operator of the xStocks platform, framed the partnership as part of its broader push into blockchain-based financial products. xStocks allows eligible customers to access tokenized versions of stocks, with the Ledger integration adding an additional custody and transaction-verification layer for supported users. The companies did not disclose financial terms of the agreement or specify which tokenized stock products are eligible at launch.

The move positions Ledger within a growing market for tokenized real-world assets, where custody providers have historically focused on digital-native tokens such as $BTC and $ETH rather than equity-linked instruments. By supporting Payward-issued tokenized stocks, Ledger enters the same self-custody category for blockchain equities that hardware wallets have occupied in the cryptocurrency sector. Details on geographic availability, supported devices and any transaction fees tied to the integration were not disclosed in the announcement.
