NYSE Books a Crypto Wing: 44M Wallets Get a Front-Row Tokenized Seat 🎟️

Blockchain.com and NYSE Group have signed a memorandum of understanding to give the crypto exchange's more than 44 million confirmed accounts a planned route into tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs through the New York Stock Exchange's digital alternative trading system, the firms said Wednesday. The arrangement is subject to regulatory approval, and the NYSE platform has yet to launch.

Under the non-binding deal, eligible Blockchain.com users would access tokenized versions of U.S. exchange-listed equities and ETFs on a venue that NYSE parent Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) announced in January. The planned platform is designed for 24/7 trading, fractional ownership, stablecoin-based funding and onchain settlement, and token holders would retain dividends and voting rights, according to NYSE.

"People shouldn't be limited in owning stocks based on where they happen to live or the brokerage and information they may or may not have access to," Blockchain.com CEO and Executive Chairman Peter Smith said. NYSE Group President Lynn Martin described Blockchain.com's international footprint across more than 70 jurisdictions as a "natural complement" to the planned venue.

The agreement also covers market data. ICE Data Services plans to distribute Blockchain.com's crypto market data and analytics to its client network, while Blockchain.com will integrate select NYSE and ICE market data feeds into its app. Neither company disclosed a launch date or financial terms.

The partnership lands one week after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission issued a five-year innovation exemption permitting qualifying venues to trade tokenized U.S. stocks on public blockchains without registering as exchanges; the exemption bars synthetic copies and requires tokens to carry the same rights as ordinary shares. Blockchain.com, which confidentially filed for a U.S. IPO in May, faces competition from Coinbase, which launched tokenized stocks on its Base network for non-U.S. users in August, as well as from Kraken's xStocks, Binance, Robinhood and a Nasdaq-linked model from Kraken.

Analysts framed the move as part of a broader convergence of crypto and equities markets. Tanay Ved, senior research associate at Talos, said "crypto venues are becoming multi-asset platforms, and traditional assets are adopting the 24/7, programmable structure crypto pioneered." Reid Noch, vice president of U.S. equity market structure at TD Securities, told Cointelegraph the NYSE's planned tokenized ATS looks "primarily like a play for retail flow" and noted that "the bigger differentiator is true weekend trading," citing the weekend surge in tokenized oil perpetual futures at the start of the Iran conflict.

The tokenized stock market has grown alongside the deal. Distributed value of tokenized equities reached $3.14 billion as of Wednesday, up more than 18% over the prior 30 days, while the number of holders climbed nearly 72% to 3.87 million, according to RWA.xyz. Separately, Cantor Fitzgerald this week flagged 95% upside in tokenization firm Securitize, and Citi Institute has forecast a $5.5 trillion base case for tokenized assets by 2030.
