The Price Crashed, the Payments Didn't: Stablecoins Outrun the Bear 🐻💵
Cross-border stablecoin flows climbed 77.5% to $220.3 billion in the 12 months ending June 2026, even as total crypto market capitalization fell 37% to $2.1 trillion over the same period, according to Chainalysis' newly released 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index. Cross-border flows were $124.2 billion in the prior 12-month period. "The bear market hit the price-sensitive half of crypto and left the payments half alone," Chainalysis said. The firm tracked 4,708 new cross-border corridors during the reporting period, carrying a combined $2.64 billion, with flows concentrated in the top quarter of corridors, which accounted for 96.1% of measurable cross-border stablecoin value. The remaining three quarters carried $8.66 billion, up from $260 million in the previous period. Average transfers ran around $3,000, a level Chainalysis said is consistent with supplier payments, remittances and savings flows out of volatile currencies. "Activity has become consistent, routed through wallets in a steady rhythm rather than in bursts," Philip Gradwell, vice president of economics at Tether, told Chainalysis. "That is the signature of trade and business activity, not speculation."
The broader stablecoin market reached about $315.6 billion in July 2026, with daily transfers averaging $195.6 billion, according to Artemis data cited in industry coverage. Stablecoin supply and transaction volumes have continued to expand as commercial use cases in payments, payroll and cross-border settlement attract established payment networks, fintech firms and crypto-native companies into the same market. The US passed the GENIUS Act in July 2025, while the European Union's MiCA rules and Hong Kong's issuer licensing regime have brought stablecoins further within formal financial oversight, Chainalysis noted. Tianwei Liu, co-founder and CEO of StraitsX, told Cointelegraph that in Asia, fragmented currencies and payment systems have created demand for stablecoin settlement, with usage extending into everyday spending behind familiar payment methods. Outside Asia, Liu said stablecoins address dollar access, remittances and protection against inflation or capital controls, including across Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Vincent Chok, co-founder and CEO of First Digital, told Cointelegraph that while traditional payment structures remain effective for established corridors, they become fragmented as businesses move money between markets with different banking systems, currencies and settlement hours.
Competition for the customer-facing layer of stablecoin flows is intensifying as payment networks, fintechs and crypto firms converge on the same opportunity. Visa's stablecoin settlement run rate rose from $3.5 billion annualised in November 2025 to about $7 billion by March 2026, and the company has since expanded a pilot that lets eligible issuers and acquirers settle obligations using stablecoins on supported blockchains, according to its announcement. Mastercard added support for several stablecoins across multiple networks in June and earlier in 2026 agreed to acquire BVNK for up to $1.8 billion. Stripe has integrated stablecoin acceptance and fiat settlement, and its acquisition of Bridge added technology for issuing, transferring and converting digital dollars. "There are plenty more parts of the system which allow the stablecoin industry to operate, and it's impossible for Visa and Mastercard to own them all. Even in the traditional financial system, they've never chosen to become card issuers," Wirex Group CEO and Co-Founder Pavel Matveev told BeInCrypto.
Specialist firms such as Wirex are positioning themselves in the layer around settlement, including accounts, cards, currency conversion, the customer relationship and dispute risk. Wirex is pursuing that layer through its banking-as-a-service business, which supplies stablecoin-linked products to exchanges, wallets and other fintech firms. Matveev said the BaaS operation reached $1 billion in annualised settlement volume within 131 days of launching in November 2025, calculated from activity across Base and Stellar, and that the company has more than 300 active partner discussions underway.
