Bitcoin eyes a hat trick not seen since 2012 🎩
Bitcoin is on track to confirm a rare three-month winning streak spanning July through September, a pattern it last recorded in 2012, according to CoinDesk data. Spot price for $BTC stood at $86,378.81 as of the report, with September trading 10.9% higher month-to-date at $86,140. The run follows a 4.8% gain in July and a 25.2% rise in August.
The only prior instance of consecutive gains across those three months occurred in 2012, when prices advanced 41.0% in July, 6.4% in August and 24.4% in September. That streak ended in October with a 9.7% decline, bottoming at $10.17 on Oct. 26 before bitcoin rallied more than 2,000% from that low to $230 by April 2013, based on CoinDesk's analysis of daily price data.
Analysts cited in the report cautioned that the 2012 setup offers limited predictive value given a sample size of one. Historical cycle models point to a potentially bullish phase beginning around October or November, though cycle patterns are described as approximate rather than fixed calendar rules.
Market structure differs sharply from the 2012 backdrop. Bitcoin was a thinly traded asset priced around $10 at the time, while today it operates within a multi-trillion-dollar market featuring deep spot and derivatives liquidity across dozens of venues and broad institutional participation, including options, futures and basis trades — conditions that did not exist at comparable scale in 2012 and that could constrain the percentage magnitude of any future rally.
