BitMEX Pulls the Lever: Derivatives OG Goes Dark September 23 ⏳

BitMEX, the derivatives exchange co-founded by Arthur Hayes, will cease all exchange operations at 04:00 UTC on September 23, 2026, the platform confirmed, ending more than a decade of perpetual swaps trading under the banner of owner and operator HDR Global Trading Limited. The closure follows a strategic review by HDR and triggers an "orderly wind-down of trading," with restrictions on new orders to be implemented ahead of the deadline. BitMEX has told users to prepare for the shutdown and to use the remaining window to complete open positions and process withdrawals.

The announcement outlines a sunset schedule covering user funds, open jobs, withdrawals and ongoing account access. BitMEX stated that other available positions will be filled "according to the closing processes." Specific timelines for staged withdrawal limits, custody arrangements and customer support have been published on the platform's official channels as part of the wind-down plan.

BitMEX, founded in 2014 in Seychelles, rose to prominence as one of the earliest crypto derivatives venues, processing billions of dollars in daily volume at its peak. Co-founders Arthur Hayes, Samuel Reed and Ben Delo faced U.S. criminal charges in 2020 over alleged violations of the Bank Secrecy Act; each later reached settlements with the Department of Justice. Hayes went on to build family office Maelstrom and continue as a public commentator across the crypto sector.

The exchange has urged clients to verify account details, settle margin positions and withdraw balances before the cutoff. BitMEX said customer assets remain segregated throughout the wind-down and that support teams will operate under extended hours until final account closures are processed. Users with unsettled disputes, corporate accounts or fiat on-ramps have been directed to dedicated transition contacts listed on the platform.

The shutdown closes a defining chapter for the offshore derivatives market and leaves former BitMEX liquidity to migrate across venues including $BTC and $ETH perpetual markets still operating at competitors. BitMEX has not announced a successor product, brand relaunch or token issuance tied to the closure, and HDR Global Trading Limited has not commented on staff redeployment beyond stating remaining functions will be handled according to the closing processes laid out in the wind-down notice.
