Traders Bet $4,200 on a Handshake Like It's the Only Market That Matters 🤝

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Polymarket traders have priced a 10-to-15-second handshake between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping at roughly 50%, making it the leading outcome on a contract built entirely around how the pair greet each other at their September 24 Washington summit. A hug sits at 5% and a kiss at 1%, according to the latest market snapshot from September 22.

The handshake contract carries about $4,200 in trading volume and $57,800 in liquidity, a small fraction of the roughly $30.6 million in aggregate volume flowing through Polymarket's broader Trump-Xi predictions dashboard. Most of that capital is concentrated on substantive questions, including tariff agreements, AI coordination and Taiwan rhetoric, while the greeting markets have drawn outsized attention relative to the money behind them.

Polymarket's market summary frames the 10-to-15-second window as consistent with a measured, protocol-driven greeting, the kind both leaders produced during their May summit in Beijing, where public exchanges were cordial and framed around partnership even as Taiwan and other disputes stayed unresolved. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning posted on X on September 21, sharing archived footage of prior Trump-Xi interactions and writing, "Looking forward to the next handshake across the Pacific!"

Preparatory talks in New York reportedly kept the agenda anchored to extending the bilateral trade truce, AI safety mechanisms and non-sensitive trade issues. The greeting market resolves on video footage rather than on whether the trade truce actually gets extended or whether AI safety language survives contact with negotiators.
