Kakao Pay and KakaoBank tap Fireblocks, eye stablecoin sandbox 🇰🇷
Kakao Pay and KakaoBank have signed a memorandum of understanding with crypto infrastructure provider Fireblocks to explore digital asset opportunities, including stablecoins, the companies announced Monday. The agreement covers proof-of-concept tests for digital asset infrastructure tailored to South Korea's regulatory, security and service requirements, with the stated goal of supporting secure onchain infrastructure for the country's emerging digital asset market. No launch, investment or implementation timeline was disclosed.
Kakao Pay operates mobile payments and financial services, while KakaoBank is one of South Korea's largest internet-only banks, and both sit inside the broader Kakao ecosystem. Fireblocks said it provides digital asset infrastructure to more than 2,500 institutions, including over 100 banks. The MoU extends Kakao Group's earlier work in the sector, following a separate memorandum signed in July with stablecoin issuer Circle to examine blockchain-based payment infrastructure, digital asset technology and won-denominated stablecoins.
The Korean financial and technology sector has accelerated its stablecoin exploration as regulators develop a framework for digital assets. In May, KB Financial Group completed a won-denominated stablecoin pilot covering issuance, offline merchant payments and cross-border remittances. In July, fintech company Toss partnered with Optimism and Sunnyside Labs on a proof of concept for won-based stablecoin payment infrastructure. The latest Kakao Pay and KakaoBank agreement adds a custody and infrastructure partner to that growing lineup of domestic initiatives.
