Bessent Drops "Economic D-Day" on Iran; Bitcoin Marches to $87K Anyway 🛢️

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Bitcoin climbed roughly 7% to above $87,000 on Monday, reaching its highest level since January as falling oil prices, softer Treasury yields, renewed ETF demand and a wave of short liquidations combined to drive risk assets higher. The rally forced approximately $919 million in crypto short positions to close as Bitcoin pushed through key resistance levels. Santiment reported a 2024-high in FOMO metrics, with open interest rising 7.6% to roughly $156 billion.

The price action unfolded against the backdrop of a sharp escalation in US economic pressure on Iran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced what he called an "economic D-Day" against the country, writing on X: "We are now entering the endgame. At dawn begins an economic D-Day — the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary." Bessent said President Donald Trump's prior military operations had "dismantled nearly all of Iran's military factories and severely weakened its nuclear program," and that the new financial offensive aims to "sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone." Bessent is scheduled to formally announce the economic sanctions at a press conference on August 24.

Separately, the Trump administration proposed a $5 billion Middle East energy fund to rebuild infrastructure damaged during the seven-month Iran war. According to The Wall Street Journal, the plan would seek matching contributions from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Iraq and Jordan, with a focus on damaged energy infrastructure and alternative oil and gas transport routes designed to reduce reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. Bitcoin opened the day holding above $77,000 before extending its advance past $87,000 as the broader risk-on tone took hold across markets.
