Shorts Got Crushed, Charts Got垂直: $BTC Tags $86K, $ETH Eyes $3K 🚀
Bitcoin pushed to a fresh eight-month high of $86,332 on Monday, extending a rally that has forced bearish traders out of their short positions and pulled fresh leverage bets back into the market. TradingView data showed $BTC hitting a new 33-week high on Bitstamp, up roughly 5.7% over 24 hours, with the coin trading near $84,984 in late European morning. CoinGlass logged $746.6 million in crypto liquidations over 24 hours, of which $647.9 million were shorts, including $159.9 million in the past hour alone, while 136,931 accounts were liquidated and the single largest order was an $11.29 million $BTC/USDT position on Binance. Open interest rose 7.59% to $156 billion even as those shorts were closed out, and 24-hour volume climbed 39% to $224 billion, a combination analysts read as traders replacing positions rather than stepping back. "Bitcoin up 5% this morning due to short perpetual futures contracts being liquidated," Schwab's head of crypto research Jim Ferraioli told CoinDesk.
The rally began after the U.S. Treasury announced it would at least double its buybacks of longer-dated government debt, lifting the operation size from around $2 billion to $4 billion and pushing long-end yields lower. Bitcoin broke out of a weeks-long $62,000-to-$67,000 range and climbed above $77,000 on Friday, with gold reaching $4,661 on CME Group data as the dollar weakened. "Bitcoin's 23% rally alongside gold during a period of U.S. dollar softness and elevated Treasury yields reflects a subtle shift in institutional sentiment," Lacie Zhang, research analyst at Bitget Wallet, told Decrypt. Jake Kennis, senior research analyst at Nansen, said the moves are consistent with concerns about debt and the dollar, but are not conclusive: "BTC and gold rising together while the dollar weakens is consistent with debasement and fiscal-credibility concerns, i.e. the classic 'hard asset' hedge trade. But a weaker dollar alongside elevated yields can also reflect higher term premium, inflation uncertainty, or changing growth expectations rather than a pure loss of faith in Treasuries, so the correlation is suggestive rather than proof as of now."
Macro tailwinds have also reasserted themselves. Brent crude dropped for four straight sessions on hopes that Washington and Tehran can ease tensions around this week's United Nations General Assembly, with WTI dipping as low as $91.59 per barrel, while traders positioned ahead of a planned meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping on September 24. The 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.014% on September 14, its highest since October 2023, then slipped back near 4.93%, with the 2-year at 4.67%, as investors took Kevin Warsh's focus on inflation as credible. "This fully anticipated rate hike eliminated a degree of uncertainty," said Tim Sun, senior researcher at HashKey. Crypto-friendly developments in Washington have supported sentiment as well, with President Trump urging the Senate to pass a "fair version" of the Clarity Act, now scheduled for a procedural vote in September, while CFTC Chair Michael Selig said the agency was preparing crypto market structure rules in case the legislation stalls.
Ethereum has tracked $BTC's lead. $ETH trades at $2,472 as of August 24, 2026, up 0.38% on the day and roughly 28% over the prior seven sessions, after surging 6% in the past 24 hours to surpass $2,730, the first time it has crossed $2,700 since the end of January. $ETH went from below $1,950 to an intraday peak near $2,546 on August 22 and has held most of that ground since. More than $3 billion in leveraged crypto positions were wiped out in 24 hours, with short positions accounting for roughly 92% of the damage, around $2.77 billion. Spot Ether ETFs pulled in $71.47 million on August 18 with BlackRock's ETHA taking $64.68 million of it, and 30-day inflows reached $524.3 million. The Ethereum Foundation activated the Platåberget public testnet on August 17 as the staging ground for Glamsterdam, targeted for Q4 2026. The 200 EMA sits at $2,139.36, and $ETH is now trading 15.6% above it, with the moving average starting to curl upward for the first time in months; RSI (14) prints 79.30 against its own signal line at 65.00.
Analysts cautioned that the rally could still reflect short-term positioning rather than a lasting shift. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs saw a combined $746 million of outflows on Tuesday and Wednesday as the Clarity Act cloture vote failed in the Senate and the Fed hiked rates, according to data by Farside Investors, then flows reversed with $160 million on Thursday and $433 million on Friday, the strongest inflow day of the week. Since the breakout through $82,000, about $2 billion in new leveraged exposure has been added, according to Coinalyze data, suggesting traders are pacing fresh bets even as shorts got wiped out. "The important distinction is that price has turned bullish faster than positioning has," Nansen's Nicolai Sondergaard said. Bitfinex Alpha noted that for a breakout to be validated, "we would want to see net taker buying rather than the profit-taking that capped the advances on 18 and 19 September," adding that "a daily close beneath $77,100 invalidates the structure to the downside, exposing the True Market Mean at $76,677." Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan told CNBC that the "crypto winter" is over and that markets could be entering the "strongest and longest-running bull market in crypto's history," though Standard Chartered called an earlier bottom "crypto spring" back in June, only for the market to slump again.
