Fed's Tiny 25-Bp Hike Has Grayscale Shrugging: "We've Seen This Movie Before" 🎬

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a target range of 3.75%–4.00%, and Grayscale Research says the move is unlikely to drive major changes in Bitcoin ($BTC) price and the broader crypto markets. Grayscale framed the increase as a mid-cycle adjustment rather than the start of a cyclical shift in official policy, arguing that the determining factor is the scale and duration of the policy path that follows, not the size of any single rate move.

Grayscale contrasted the September decision with the Fed's tightening campaign from March 2022 through July 2023, during which the federal funds rate was raised by 550 basis points to contain inflation. The firm said that sustained tightening likely weighed on Bitcoin and other digital assets during the last bear market. The latest 25-basis-point increase is smaller in scale, and Grayscale expects one or two additional rate hikes in 2026. Grayscale cited a comparable 1997 hike that produced a similar outcome, and noted in a September 17 post on X that crypto markets remained green following the announcement, adding that stablecoin issuers Circle (@circle) and Tether (@tether) were worth watching in the current environment.

Grayscale's central question is whether the increase is an isolated adjustment or the start of a broader tightening cycle. The firm's assessment focuses on whether subsequent increases remain limited rather than escalating into a sustained tightening path comparable to the 2022–2023 cycle. The Fed's target range of 3.75%–4.00% now stands as the latest data point in that policy trajectory, with Grayscale indicating that further moves of similar magnitude are not expected to materially alter conditions for digital assets.
