Short Squeeze, Long Memories: $BTC Punches $86K While Bears Learn Gravity 🪨

Bitcoin traded as high as $86,332 on Monday, an eight-month peak last seen in late January, with $BTC last cited at $84,984, up roughly 5.4% over 24 hours according to CoinGecko and TradingView data on Bitstamp. Ethereum cleared $2,730 for the first time since the end of January, while $XRP added 6.6%, Solana 7%, Sui 22.3%, Venice Token 22%, Sei 20%, Near Protocol 19.9%, Render 17.9% and Avalanche 13.9% over the same window, per CoinMarketCap.

The move was powered primarily by forced buying rather than fresh long conviction. CoinGlass logged $746.6 million in 24-hour liquidations, of which $647.9 million were shorts, including $159.9 million in the hour before publication; on an alternative count the 24-hour short-side total reached $740.8 million, with $877.31 million wiped across crypto markets and 136,931 accounts liquidated. The largest single order was an $11.29 million $BTC/USDT position on Binance. Open interest nonetheless climbed 7.59% to $156 billion and 24-hour volume rose 39% to $224 billion, a combination pointing to traders replacing positions rather than stepping back. The taker long-short volume ratio in crypto futures leaned 53% in favor of buyers, Bitcoin futures open interest topped 700K BTC for the first time in weeks, and Binance's whale derivatives position ratio sat above 2.0.

The macro backdrop shifted in crypto's favor last week when the U.S. Treasury announced it would roughly double its buybacks of longer-dated government debt, lifting operation size from around $2 billion to $4 billion, pushing long-end yields lower and pulling Bitcoin out of a weeks-long $62,000-to-$67,000 range above $77,000 on Friday. Gold climbed to $4,661 on CME Group data, then slipped 0.65% to $4,350 on Monday, while the 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.014% on September 14, its highest since October 2023, before easing near 4.93% as the 2-year sat at 4.67%. Brent crude fell for four straight sessions to $101.97 after touching $108 in mid-September, with WTI dipping as low as $91.59 on Monday after diplomatic signals from Qatar's Foreign Ministry and President Donald Trump on potential U.S.–Iran talks, and as traders positioned for a Trump–Xi meeting on September 24.

"Bitcoin's 23% rally alongside gold during a period of U.S. dollar softness and elevated Treasury yields reflects a subtle shift in institutional sentiment," Lacie Zhang, research analyst at Bitget Wallet, told Decrypt, adding that Bitcoin is "increasingly sharing narrative space with gold as a digital hedge against structural fiat debasement." Jake Kennis, senior research analyst at Nansen, said the correlation is "suggestive rather than proof as of now," noting that "a weaker dollar alongside elevated yields can also reflect higher term premium, inflation uncertainty, or changing growth expectations rather than a pure loss of faith in Treasuries." Nexo analyst Iliya Kalchev told Decrypt that Bitcoin absorbed a Federal Reserve rate hike, a Bank of Japan hike to a 31-year high and the Senate's rejection of the Clarity Act without trading meaningfully below $75,000, while Tim Sun, senior researcher at HashKey, said a "sell the rumor, buy the news" setup was already in place, with stop-loss forced buying carrying BTC through $80,000 and $84,000.

Spot Ether ETFs pulled in $71.47 million on August 18 with BlackRock's ETHA taking $64.68 million, and 30-day inflows reached $524.3 million, while the Ethereum Foundation activated the Platåberget public testnet on August 17 as the staging ground for Glamsterdam, targeted for Q4 2026. The SEC published a proposed framework letting crypto projects raise capital under defined exemptions and exit securities classification once core managerial commitments are met, and CFTC Chair Michael Selig said the agency was preparing crypto market structure rules in case the Clarity Act stalls. $ETH traded at $2,472 on August 24, up 0.38% on the day and roughly 28% over seven sessions, with RSI (14) printing 79.30 against its signal line at 65.00 and price sitting 15.6% above a 200 EMA at $2,139.36 that had capped every rally attempt since May. Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan told CNBC the "crypto winter" is over and that markets could be entering the "strongest and longest-running bull market in crypto's history," a framing Standard Chartered tried earlier with a "crypto spring" call in June before the market slumped, while Bitfinex Alpha said a daily close beneath $77,100 would invalidate the structure to the downside, exposing the True Market Mean at $76,677.
