Kevin O'Leary's $1M Bitcoin Bet Hinges on a Quantum Computer That Doesn't Exist Yet ðŸ§
Kevin O'Leary mapped out a path to $1 million Bitcoin on stage at Avalanche Summit in New York, contingent on a single industry hurdle: the arrival of "Q-Day," the theoretical point at which a quantum computer could forge the cryptographic signatures securing every Bitcoin wallet. Speaking with The Rollup podcast, O'Leary said the unresolved quantum risk is currently capping institutional Bitcoin exposure near 3% of portfolios, with large funds treating the asset as a sliver of gold rather than a core holding. If developers resolve that uncertainty, he said, the allocation ceiling rises. Current estimates for a cryptographically relevant quantum machine range from the early 2030s to never.
The "Shark Tank" investor appeared wearing an $11 million Shohei Ohtani baseball card sealed in a Tiffany holder embedded with 110 carats of diamonds, using the physical collectible to illustrate tokenization. He also recanted an 18-month-old thesis in which owning Bitcoin and Ethereum captured 97% of crypto's upside because the industry would standardize on Ethereum. O'Leary now says that did not occur and likely will not, calling ETH "not fast enough and not secure enough" while flagging the assessment as his own opinion. He framed tokenization as a fragmented race in which entire industries pick their own chain, and argued whichever blockchain the first major exchange adopts for tokenization will see that token "go through the roof" by becoming the plumbing for every trade.
O'Leary positioned crypto as a candidate twelfth sector of the S&P 500, arguing it services the other eleven. The remarks arrived a week after the SEC approved its Innovation Exemption for tokenized stocks, and as ICE evaluates Avalanche as a settlement layer for the NYSE's in-development trading system. Robinhood has separately built Robinhood Chain on Ethereum via Arbitrum for its tokenization push. $BTC and $ETH both currently trade well below O'Leary's projected milestones, with quantum-resistant upgrades to Bitcoin's signature scheme still under discussion in developer channels.
