Saylor's 950-coin shopping spree leaves Strategy 1,363 BTC shy of its all-time hoarding record 🧅
Strategy, the largest publicly traded Bitcoin treasury company, acquired 950 BTC for $75.7 million at an average price of $79,670 per coin between Monday and Sunday, according to a Form 8-K filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. The purchase brought Strategy's holdings to 846,000 BTC, acquired for about $63.80 billion at an average cost of $75,416 per Bitcoin, including fees and expenses, and leaves the company 1,363 coins short of its June 22 record of 847,363 BTC, the largest stack it has ever reported per BitcoinTreasuries. With Bitcoin trading at $84,925 at the time of publication, Strategy was sitting on an unrealized gain of about $8.05 billion on its holdings. Shares of Strategy, which trades under the ticker $MSTR, rose 7.4% to $165.2 in pre-market trading on Monday, according to Yahoo Finance data.
Strategy's Bitcoin buys were less than half of what it spent on its own preferred stock during the same week. The company repurchased 1,771,238 shares of its STRC perpetual preferred stock for $174.0 million, up from $139.3 million the week before, and bought back none of its STRF, STRK, STRD or MSTR stock. STRC rose 0.35% to $98.85 during Monday's pre-market trading. Strategy said it still had $875.1 million available under its preferred-stock repurchase program and $1 billion remaining under its MSTR share repurchase program. The company also reported no sales under its at-the-market offering programs between Sept. 14 and Sept. 20, meaning it did not raise funds through those programs during the period.
Both outlays came from Strategy's USD Cash pool, which management established last month for Bitcoin purchases, buybacks and general corporate purposes. That balance fell to $1.05 billion as of Sept. 20 from $1.30 billion a week earlier, a draw of $249.7 million that matches the two purchases almost to the dollar. A further $57.4 million came out of the firm's separate USD Reserve, which backs preferred dividends and interest payments, leaving that pool at $5.04 billion. Strategy reported holding $6.09 billion of USD assets as of Sept. 20, per Michael Saylor's Sept. 21 post on X.
Strive, the world's fifth-largest corporate Bitcoin holder, also announced Bitcoin buys on Monday. It added 1,355 BTC last week, bringing its total to 26,355 coins, and its shares rose 6.44% to $32.03. Strategy's $79,670 average buy price is $15,408 above the $64,262 it took for the 1,690 BTC it sold in the week to Aug. 9, and roughly $4,250 above its own blended cost basis, and the company broke a long-held refusal to sell in May, disposing of 6,948 BTC for around $432.5 million under a June capital framework permitting up to $1.25 billion of sales, of which about $820 million remains unused.
