Bears Got Crushed, Billions Got Rekt, and Bitcoin Decided to Pack Its Bags Past $85K 🐻πŸ’₯

Bitcoin traded at $84,984 in late European morning hours, up 5.4% over 24 hours and well clear of the $82,284 high set on Sept. 4, extending a rally that briefly pushed it above $85,000 for the first time since Jan. 30. The move was powered largely by forced buying rather than fresh conviction, with $746.6 million in positions liquidated over 24 hours, of which $647.9 million were shorts, according to Coinglass data. An additional $159.9 million was liquidated in the hour before publication, 95% of it on the short side, and bitcoin shorts alone accounted for $277.5 million of the 24-hour total while ether shorts added $122.8 million. Open interest across the market climbed 7.59% to $156 billion even as those positions were closed out, with 24-hour volume up 39% at $224 billion, a combination that suggests traders are replacing positions rather than stepping back. A total of 95 of the 100 CoinDesk 100 constituents traded higher, lifting the index 3.0%, though leadership flipped from Friday's small-cap and DeFi rotation.

The move sits inside a broader rally that lifted ether to $2,472 on Aug. 24, up 0.38% on the day and roughly 28% over seven sessions, its strongest weekly performance of the year, before $ETH extended to $2,730 on Monday, its first print above $2,700 since late January. $BTC's seven-day gain stood at 23.2% in an earlier leg of the rally, with gold climbing to $4,661 on CME Group data as the U.S. dollar weakened. "Bitcoin's 23% rally alongside gold during a period of U.S. dollar softness and elevated Treasury yields reflects a subtle shift in institutional sentiment," Lacie Zhang, research analyst at Bitget Wallet, told Decrypt. Jake Kennis, senior research analyst at Nansen, said the correlation is "suggestive rather than proof as of now," noting that a weaker dollar alongside elevated yields can also reflect higher term premium or inflation uncertainty rather than a pure loss of faith in Treasuries. Zhang added that "as institutional access expands, Bitcoin's dual identity as both a macro hedge and a technology play continues to solidify."

The macro backdrop shifted after the U.S. Treasury announced it would at least double its buybacks of longer-dated government debt, lifting operation size from roughly $2 billion to $4 billion, which pushed long-end yields lower and reopened risk appetite across crypto. The SEC simultaneously published a proposed framework allowing crypto projects to raise capital under defined exemptions and exit securities classification once core managerial commitments are met, while President Donald Trump publicly pressured the Senate to move on the Clarity Act, now scheduled for a procedural vote in September, and CFTC Chair Michael Selig said the agency was preparing crypto market structure rules in case the legislation stalls. Spot Ether ETFs pulled in $71.47 million on Aug. 18, with BlackRock's ETHA taking $64.68 million of it, and 30-day inflows reached $524.3 million. The Ethereum Foundation activated the PlatΓ₯berget public testnet on Aug. 17 as the staging ground for Glamsterdam, targeted for Q4 2026.

Altcoins followed the move higher, with XRP up 6.6%, Solana up 7%, and HyperLiquid up roughly 4% over 24 hours, per CoinMarketCap data, while Sui (SUI) led at 22.3%, followed by Venice Token (VVV) at 22%, Sei (SEI) at 20%, Near Protocol (NEAR) at 19.9%, Render (RENDER) at 17.9%, and Avalanche (AVAX) at 13.9%. Approximately $400 million in leveraged trades were liquidated in the hours surrounding the move, bringing the 24-hour liquidation total to $750 million across 136,931 investors, with the largest single order, worth $11.29 million, hitting Binance's $BTC/USDT pair. Brent crude traded flat at $101.97 after touching $108 in mid-September, gold slipped 0.65% to $4,350, and silver fell 0.32% to $66.24, leaving macro conditions steady rather than decisively risk-on.
