ECB's Pontes Bridge Goes Live, XRPL Shows Up Uninvited to the Central Bank Money Party 🌉

—By our Regulation & Policy Desk2 min read

The European Central Bank's wholesale digital settlement bridge, Pontes, went live on Monday, September 21, with ECB President Christine Lagarde confirming the launch following the Eurogroup meeting. The system connects market distributed ledger technology platforms to the Eurosystem's existing TARGET payment rails, allowing tokenized securities to settle the cash leg in central bank money rather than private settlement assets such as stablecoins.

Four market operators are connected on day one. One of them, Axiology, runs a permissioned infrastructure stack derived from XRP Ledger technology, though settlement still occurs in euro central-bank money rather than public XRP. "Pontes brings the stability and trust of central bank money to the European tokenised finance ecosystem," ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone said. "It will give an important advantage to help it scale."

Pontes operates a dual model, either settling via cash tokens on a Eurosystem DLT platform or triggering settlement into T2, the Eurosystem's real-time gross settlement system. It builds on the Eurosystem's 2024 wholesale DLT settlement trials, during which participants identified access to a risk-free settlement asset as crucial for wider adoption of tokenized finance. The ECB said the system initially offers a core set of services, with full implementation expected by 2028.

The Eurosystem is also developing Appia, a complementary initiative exploring an integrated ecosystem for DLT-based financial services, with a blueprint expected by 2028. According to 21Shares, the split matters for XRP investors, noting that XRPL utility can scale through institutional deployments such as Pontes without necessarily driving demand for the $XRP token itself.
