Absa Just Put Africa’s Crypto in a Bank Vault, and Even Ripple Is Smiling 🏦

South Africa’s Absa Corporate and Investment Banking has launched Absa Digital Asset Custody, a live institutional platform built on Ripple’s custody technology, with the bank confirming the go-live on September 21, 2026 and describing the rollout as “a digital first for Africa.” The service delivers private-key management, approval controls, and bank-grade compliance, functioning as a regulated vault rather than a trading venue for digital assets held by Absa’s institutional clients. Ripple’s Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa, Reece Merrick, called the launch a “major milestone” for bank-grade digital asset infrastructure on the continent.

The product traces back to October 2025, when Absa first outlined its plan to bring regulated digital asset storage to its corporate and institutional clients through a partnership with Ripple, originally reported by CoinGape. Under that arrangement, Ripple supplies the underlying custody technology while Absa CIB operates the service within its existing regulatory and compliance framework in South Africa. The September 21 go-live converts that partnership into a production system available to qualified institutional counterparties.

The launch extends Ripple’s broader Africa strategy, which has previously spanned the RLUSD stablecoin rollout and integrations with Chipper Cash and Flutterwave, and follows separate Ripple custody agreements with BBVA and BNY Mellon in other jurisdictions. Absa Digital Asset Custody is positioned exclusively as a safekeeping service, with no trading, execution, or settlement functionality built in, and the bank has indicated that access is restricted to vetted institutional clients operating under its onboarding and compliance procedures.

Absa CIB framed the rollout as part of a measured push to give African corporates regulated access to digital assets through familiar banking infrastructure rather than through standalone crypto venues. The bank has not disclosed specific client counts, asset thresholds, or fee structures tied to the new custody service, and Reece Merrick’s remarks focused on infrastructure readiness and regulatory alignment.

No pricing for $BTC, $ETH, $XRP, or other tokens was announced alongside the custody launch, and the platform does not expose clients to direct market exposure on its own balance sheet.
