Two Years, Two Fortunes: Bitcoin Up 28%, Median Altcoin Down 74% 📉
Bitcoin has compounded higher while the median mid-cap altcoin has lost roughly 74% over the past two years, according to a new report from analytics firm Glassnode and crypto exchange Bybit. Bitcoin gained 28% over the stretch, Ethereum ($ETH) landed roughly sideways, and the report frames the divergence as the defining feature of this cycle, with the mid-cap complex "halves and halves again." The figures are based on data as of the settled close of August 23 and describe the venues Glassnode tracks rather than the entire market.
Leverage has clustered in the riskiest corners of the market even as price gains concentrated at the top. Bitcoin ($BTC) carries futures open interest worth about 2% of its market capitalization, while speculative small caps carry far more, with PEPE near 24%, the report found. The pattern marks a reversal of the "altseason" rotation many holders came to expect, in which capital moves from Bitcoin down into smaller tokens as a rally matures.
Bitcoin's most violent rally during its two-year drawdown was not powered by fresh bullish bets but by short sellers getting liquidated. Over five days in August, Bitcoin climbed 24.6% even as coin-denominated open interest fell 12.6%, the report found. That combination suggests the move ran on the forced unwinding of existing shorts rather than on traders piling into new longs.
Institutional demand still tilts heavily toward the top of the market. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have pulled in about $55.2 billion in cumulative net inflows, dwarfing the roughly $13.1 billion into Ethereum funds, which recently logged a multi-day outflow streak. Solana's spot ETFs, newer and smaller, have drawn about $29.7 million.
Just days ago, Bitcoin surged back above $80,000 after a dovish Federal Reserve forecast, lifting the total crypto market capitalization up 4.6% in a day to about $2.85 trillion. Several majors outran Bitcoin in the bounce, with Solana up roughly 10% on the day and names including NEAR and Uniswap posting far larger gains, hinting at the kind of market breadth that had been missing for a year.
