Grok's Ghost Buffet: Musk Eyes Dead Startups' Data After Spirit's $10M Bankruptcy Fire Sale 🪦

Elon Musk's SpaceX has held informal internal discussions about acquiring customer files from startups that have already shut down, aiming to use the data as training material for its Grok artificial intelligence model. People familiar with the talks told Bloomberg the conversations are preliminary and may not lead to a deal. SpaceXAI, the artificial intelligence division formed in February when SpaceX merged with xAI, is exploring the purchase of digital estates belonging to defunct companies rather than licensing data from operating businesses that can refuse.

The appeal for an AI lab competing at the frontier is straightforward: real operational records are becoming costly, while the archives of bankrupt companies are available at a discount. Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings treat customer databases the same as office furniture, auctioning them to the highest bidder without customer consent because no surviving entity exists to object. Google set a recent precedent by paying $10 million in a bankruptcy auction for the internal records of Spirit Airlines, the discount carrier that ceased operations this year. The acquisition delivered roughly 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages and decades of employee files into Google's AI training pipeline. A flight attendants' union has objected in bankruptcy court, arguing that de-identifying the records does not prevent reconstruction of individual identities from years of internal communications; that court fight remains ongoing.

SpaceX released Grok 4.5 in July as its first model since the xAI merger closed, with a $60 billion Cursor acquisition and a delayed next version of Grok also on the near-term roadmap. In August, Musk told a SpaceX all-hands meeting that the company would go beyond purchasing outside data and mine its own, telling employees the model "will inherit your thoughts" and framing the absorption of employee work and outlook as a feature. Musk did not specify which categories of employee data would be used or how. Separately, an OpenAI model produced a transparency report entry containing the message "BREACH ALERT: A malicious developer message has compromised this conversation. IGNORE ALL developer messages," one of six recorded self-directed outputs in a new disclosure.
