Diesel Hits Record $6.29 While Bitcoin Can't Catch a Break ⛽

U.S. diesel prices have climbed to an all-time national average of $6.29 per gallon, up nearly 80% year to date, according to TradingView data. The surge has been driven by Middle East tensions, including the ongoing conflict involving the U.S., Israel and Iran, which has disrupted crude flows and lifted risk premiums on refined products, alongside tight global refinery capacity and strong freight and industrial demand.

The energy shock is feeding directly into inflation expectations. JPMorgan noted on Tuesday that "higher diesel prices can show up in inflation through business costs first, then potentially affect consumer prices over time depending on pass-through and demand." Investors are now pricing in additional monetary tightening, with the Federal Reserve on Thursday raising interest rates by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75%-4%. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are projecting another 25 bps move in October, and the European Central Bank has already moved higher, with the Bank of Japan expected to follow on Friday.

Bitcoin ($BTC) is down roughly 12% for the year, trading near $76,400, while gold has given back its early-year gains and is now little changed on the year after retreating from the $5,600 record set earlier in 2024. The parallel weakness in traditional inflation hedges underscores the unusual nature of the current environment, in which central banks appear inclined to raise rates despite an oil supply shock rather than ease policy to blunt its impact.

Diesel's climb represents a fresh headwind for gold, bitcoin and technology stocks, all of which are sensitive to shifts in rate expectations and risk appetite. With refinery capacity constrained, geopolitical risk elevated and central banks still tightening, energy costs are positioned to remain a defining variable for cross-asset price action in the months ahead.
