Stripe and Tempo Built the Checkout, Ripple Snuck XRP Into the Cart 🛒
Ripple has expanded its XRP Ledger developer kit to support the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) co-authored by Stripe and Tempo, enabling AI agents to pay for data, computing and other online services using $XRP and the $RLUSD stablecoin. Version 1.1 of the XRPL AI Starter Kit also adds support for the Open Wallet Standard, a common interface that lets software manage wallets across multiple blockchains, according to a RippleX developer post.
In the updated workflow, an AI agent requests a resource, the service responds with a price, the agent authorizes payment and the service delivers the requested item. RippleX head of product Jazzi Cooper confirmed the integration on X, writing, "Agentic payments will be multi-platform and multi-rail. Our job is to make $XRP and $RLUSD first-class options wherever developers are building." Cooper is among RippleX's product leads overseeing the XRP Ledger developer ecosystem.
The MPP integration follows Ripple's June addition of support for x402, another web payments standard, and means Ripple is backing both protocols rather than picking one. Ripple is among dozens of major companies that recently joined the x402 Foundation alongside Coinbase, Circle and other industry participants. Supporting both standards gives builders using either protocol a way to accept payments on the XRP Ledger and gives Ripple a route into applications whose developers chose their payment standard before choosing a blockchain.
Ripple's announcement names no customers using the new MPP integration commercially and provides no payment volume for it, with the payment software remaining in beta. Individual transactions already support issued tokens such as $RLUSD, but $XRP payment channels — which let an agent deposit funds once and authorize incremental spending across many queries — currently require $XRP, with stablecoin support in those channels dependent on a proposed ledger upgrade.
$XRP held near $1.30 as bulls maintained upside momentum after the Federal Reserve's latest rate hike, according to market data cited in coverage of the announcement.
