S&P Global Snags OpenZeppelin, Because Even TradFi Wants a Smart Contract Bouncer 🔐
S&P Global has agreed to acquire OpenZeppelin, a blockchain security firm that has facilitated more than $37 trillion in value transferred through its smart contract software and completed over 900 security engagements since its 2015 founding. The companies announced the deal on Thursday without disclosing financial terms, and the transaction remains subject to closing conditions.
S&P Global said the acquisition is intended to expand its risk assessment capabilities in the digital asset market. "Our digital assets strategy centers on bringing trusted data, benchmarks and transparent risk assessment to markets as they move onchain," Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings, said. Le Pallec added that OpenZeppelin would strengthen the company's ability to evaluate smart contract and onchain technology risk.
OpenZeppelin's contracts library and other open-source applications will remain free and publicly maintained on GitHub following the deal, according to the announcement. The company will continue to operate as a separate business unit within S&P Global, with chief executive Demian Brener remaining in place and reporting to Le Pallec.
The move comes days after S&P Global led a strategic investment in Paris-based crypto market data provider Kaiko, extending that firm's Series B funding to $110 million. Together, the transactions signal the financial data and benchmarks provider's continued push into tokenized financial market infrastructure.
Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin develops open-source smart contract software and provides security assessments for blockchain projects and financial institutions. S&P Global, a major provider of financial data, ratings and benchmarks, has identified digital assets and onchain infrastructure as an area of strategic expansion.
