Ruble-Backed Perpetuals: Moscow Exchange Joins the Crypto Derivatives Cuckoo Clock 🥚

Russia's Moscow Exchange (MOEX) will launch perpetual futures contracts tied to $BTC, $ETH, $XRP, $SOL and $TRX on September 22, the bourse confirmed this week. The move comes after President Vladimir Putin signed legislation permitting regulated crypto trading, positioning Russia's largest stock exchange to join a growing list of traditional venues offering digital asset derivatives.

Unlike spot trading, MOEX's contracts will be quoted in U.S. dollars and settled in Russian rubles, with no delivery of the underlying cryptocurrencies. Access will be limited to qualified investors, in line with the country's emerging framework for digital asset oversight.

The exchange framed the launch as a milestone for the Russian derivatives market. "The launch of perpetual digital currency futures is an important milestone in the development of the Russian derivatives market. We see strong investor demand for digital asset derivatives. Providing access to s[trongly regulated instruments]…," a MOEX representative said.

Prices of the five listed tokens extended 24-hour gains following the announcement, even as the U.S. Federal Reserve moved to hike interest rates earlier in the week. Market data showed $BTC, $ETH, $XRP, $SOL and $TRX all adding to intraday advances, though the broader macro backdrop remained mixed.

MOEX said it will monitor trading activity and may expand the lineup of digital-asset derivatives depending on demand and regulatory developments. The exchange previously launched crypto-linked products under sandbox conditions, but the September rollout marks its first perpetual futures accessible to qualified retail and institutional clients under the new crypto law.

The futures push arrives as Russian policymakers accelerate efforts to channel crypto activity through licensed venues, citing capital-controls concerns and the need for tax transparency. Additional details on margin requirements and contract specifications have been published on the exchange's official site.
