Cardano Joins Mastercard's Crypto Partner Program, Scalability Hits "Beast Mode" 🦬
The Cardano Foundation has joined Mastercard's Crypto Partner Program as part of the network operator's Blockchains track, the foundation announced via X on September 15, 2026. Under the arrangement, the Cardano Foundation will collaborate with Mastercard and other program participants working across payments and stablecoins, with a focus on cross-border money movement, B2B transactions, and settlement. The foundation described the move as another step toward connecting public blockchain infrastructure with the way money moves globally.
In a separate development, Cardano's agentic economy infrastructure advanced with the integration of Masumi into the x402 repository and its official packages. The integration enables x402 payments on Cardano across mainnet, preprod, and preview testnet, positioning the network as a working implementation within the x402 codebase for AI agents to transact on-chain. Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has framed agentic finance as a central pillar of the network's strategy, outlining at the 2026 Wyoming Blockchain Symposium how AI agents, blockchain, privacy, and digital finance could converge to onboard the next billion users to crypto.
On the scalability front, Cardano developers are preparing to demonstrate the Leios node on a local cluster with emulated round-trip times designed to mirror higher-fidelity network conditions. Early results indicate Leios peaking at 250 TxkB/s, equivalent to roughly 1,000 simple 250-byte transactions per second, compared with Cardano mainnet's current ceiling of 4.5 TxkB/s. Input Output Product Manager Carlos Lopez de Lara characterized the benchmark in plain terms, stating, "The throughput is there; the work ahead sits in the network stack, where tuning and optimisation will carry these numbers out of the lab and into real internet conditions. Cardano, beast mode enabled."
Hoskinson has said he expects Leios to reach the Cardano mainnet by the end of 2026, framing the upgrade as a potential unlock for higher-throughput applications across the network.
